My work comes out of reacting to things around me. The bad printing on a bread bag tab, the cut-offs from a furniture project, the unexpected moment inside a salvaged chair. If I find something ugly I can make it interesting. I can make something out of just about anything, so I rarely have to purchase materials.
What I am after is already in the object. Ancient sunlight is stored in coal — one match and physics unzips, the energy shines again as fire or diamond. The salvaged chair back, the Victorian headboard, the found key — these are not raw materials. They are storage devices. The work is the release.
